Real-time vs bulk email verification: which do you need?
Real-time checks stop bad addresses at the door. Bulk checks clean the list you already have. Most businesses need both, in different proportions.

There are two ways to verify addresses, and they solve different problems.
Real-time verification
Each address is checked at the moment it is collected, usually through an API call from your signup, checkout or lead form. The answer comes back in a second or two, so the person can fix a mistake on the spot.
Best for
- Signup, checkout and lead-capture forms
- Preventing fake and disposable registrations
- Keeping a new list clean from day one
Strengths: stops bad data entering; the person is present to correct it; no future cleanup.
Limits: adds a little latency to the form; you pay per signup, including the bad ones; it does nothing for addresses already on your list.
Bulk verification
You upload a file (usually CSV) and get it back with a result for every row, processed in the background.
Best for
- Cleaning an existing list
- Checking imported or acquired contacts, such as a CRM export
- A pre-campaign check after a long gap
Strengths: cleans thousands of addresses at once; cheaper to run as a batch; no code needed.
Limits: results are a snapshot. Addresses go stale after the check, so cleaning isn't one-off.
How to choose
| Situation | Choose |
|---|---|
| You collect addresses through web forms | Real-time |
| You have a list that hasn't been mailed in months | Bulk |
| You import leads from events or partners | Bulk |
| You run free trials that attract abuse | Real-time |
| You send regular campaigns to a growing list | Both |
The usual setup
Most teams do both:
- Real-time at every form, so new addresses are good on arrival.
- Bulk before big campaigns and on a regular schedule, to catch addresses that went bad since (how often to clean).
With Mailsure, both use the same credits: one per address verified, with malformed addresses, duplicates in uploaded files and unknown results never billed. Start with a bulk upload to see where your list stands, then add the API to stop the problem coming back.
